Have you ever tried to translate Mac PageMaker files, especially Cyrillic?
This process is easy with PC PageMaker but turns into a little headache with Mac projects when you need to deliver a Mac PageMaker file.

In such a case you need MS Word for windows to convert Mac tagged PageMaker text back and forth between PC and Mac platform. You will also need PageMaker for PC to re-export files translated with Trados and then to import them to Mac PageMaker. The reason for having PC PageMaker is that Trados encodes Cyrillic characters with digits after translating and the only way to make normal tagged text with human-readable translated text is to re-export it with PC PageMaker.

In brief, the process is as follows:

1) Export stories to be translated into Tagged text format with Mac PageMaker.

2) Open the file on PC with MS Word and replace the string "" with ��
3) Translate resulting file from step 2 with Trados TagEditor
4) Import the file translated with TradosTagEditor into PC PageMaker
5) Export the text of the story imported at step 4 into a tagged text with PC PageMaker
6) Open the file on PC with MS Word and replace the string �� with ""
7) Save the file from step 6 as a text-only file with Mac encoding
8) Import the file from step 7 into your Mac Publication

The above approach is good for small files
For large publications with hundreds of stories you can use the script I described in my �HowTo� article about story collecting for Mac PageMaker
Using such a script will allow you to automate export-import routines and concentrate on translation

I have used this technique with several PageMaker user manuals and it worked well
