Hello there,
My PC seems slower than it used to be and I'm looking for some way to get it back in good speed. Has anybody tried SpeedUpMyPC? (any version, but the current is 2.0)
If so, I'd like to hear (oh, well, read) your opinion.

Whether a speeder-upper will work or not, depends a lot on what kind of PC you have. Tell us a bit more about your computer? When last did you back up all your data on the second hard disk, and repartitioned, formatted and reinstalled everything from scratch on the first hard disk?

Hello Jerónimo,
I assume you're using some Windows version, if so, consider that Windows tends to naturally become slower and heavier after some time, especially if you install and uninstall software.
Before buying any new software, I would suggest you re-install the operating system and all the applications you need. Afterwards I would go through some optimization like removing useless - and sometimes dangerous - background programs and services, autostart and so forth.

You can find numerous articles on the net on how to improve Windows performance and, personally, I'd rather try those out before purchasing and installing some new (and potentially useless) software.

A last piece of advice: if you re-install the system DO NOT connect to the Internet before you set up a proper firewall program (even better if you're behind a router or similar) and antivirus. Last time I did it, Sasser was around and I got infected in less than thirty seconds of browsing the web (no need to download and run any file for these nifty little viruses).

Are we all supposed to do that? I am seriously concearned now. I just use my computer and take it for service twice a year to the nearest computer specialist.

The same happened to me - what's ironic is that I was trying to download Windows updates to patch my OS after re-installing it...
I got 66 instances of Sasser in a handful of seconds:-((

Yes, that was ironic...
I learnt that it's not very wise to rely on Microsoft when it comes to computer security.
The first thing I do when I have to re-install Windows is to download a copy of AVG (www.grisoft.com) and ZoneAlarm (www.zonelabs.com) or Kerio (www.kerio.com). I then re-install the operating system, and before connecting to the net, I install the antivirus and firewall. Then I connect to the Internet, download the updates for the antivirus and finally go to Windows Update. At this stage I usually start praying and hoping that the latest SP won't break my system.
What about the penguin in the title?
Well, even though I have Windows installed on both my PCs, I've been using only Linux for quite a long time now. Thus the penguin is Tux:

Hourly automated updates, etc, etc., and cheaper than other shareware products. I'm using it on all machines for some 7 years, not a single incident.

I had a similar configuration on my laptop which is good for normal text-editing work. When I started using the SUN Translation Editor, though, I had to add more RAM to make it work decently (now I have 700mb). I think that adding some more RAM wouldn't do your system any harm, in fact it could only improve things.

I'm quite sure you're not the only one in here.
Anyway, formatting and re-installing is not a difficult task, but configuring the system may be harder. If you're not too familiar with it and don't want to read some documentation (not that much really) perhaps it would be wiser to contact some specialist.
If, on the other hand, you'd like to try and re-install, I'm sure you'll find someone willing to lend a hand (I'm one of them).

As said in a previous post, I would go for AVG - www.grisoft.com. It has a free version available for download and it works very well. I've been using it for a long time (years) and never had a problem.
Firewalls: ZoneAlarm (www.zonelabs.com), my favourite, and Kerio (www.kerio.com), very good too.
