Hi folks.

I graduated back in 2004 in Spanish and I did a bit of translation work ad-hoc before moving on to a full-time role in another field. I am now looking to revert back to translating on a part-time basis. I am looking to complete an MA by Distance Learning but can't financially afford to start this course until late 2011.

So in the meantime, can anybody recommend any good books for me to read? My language pair is Spanish>English. I'm looking for books that may offer sample texts to translate and best practice guidelines etc...

Thanks and happy translating

Introduction to Spanish Translation by Jack Childs. The link shows the copy I have, but I see there is now a second edition.
Teaching Translation from Spanish to English: Worlds beyond Words by Allison Beeby Lonsdale.
Thnking Spanish Translation. A Course in Translation Method: Spanish to English by Sándor Hervey, Ian Higgins and Louise M. Haywood.

I haven’t read this book, but it looks relevant: Manual of Spanish-English Translation by Kelly Washbourne.

Useful and enlightening for us EN>ES translators even though the focus of the book is ES>EN: La traducción del inglés al castellano. Guía para el traductor by Marina Orellana.

Although this book is about FR>EN, I found that many of the principles, and even a good proportion of the specific examples, can apply to ES>EN: Translation, Linguistics and Culture: A French—English Handbook by Nigel Armstrong.

Two more books about translation in general, which I found extremely valuable reading:
Le Ton Beau De Marot: In Praise Of The Music Of Language by Douglas R. Hofstadter.
Becoming a Translator: An Accelorated Course by Douglas Robinson. You can probably find less expensive copies if you look for the first edition.
