I visited CeskyKrumlov. A Czech tour guide, Daisy, pointed to a sign over a ?bakery shop, which had the word TRLDLNIC or TRDLYNIC or ?????. The guide said this word meant "very clumsy" or "inept" or "very awkward" in Czech. Can anyone tell me what the correct word is, and how it is pronounced????

much thanks, Deb

Trdelník Oct 13, 2011

Hi Deb,

I think the word you're looking for is "trdelník," which is pronounced [tr̩dɛlɲiːk].

See the link:

The name has nothing to do with the "very awkward people" - this is another meaning of the word "trdlo"

The trdlo, from which the trdelník is derived, means a wooden stick for crushing in a mortar.

TRDELNIK Oct 13, 2011

I appreciate your help, Jiri, Daniel and Blanka. I remember my tour guide, Daisy, explained that a frustrated and inept person might use a large stick to try to fix something (like a computer???) and you might say this person is behaving like a "trdelnik".
And they are delicious too.
Děkuji, Deborah
