Hello everyone,

Would you be able to share information on getting an interpreter certificate or whatever appropriate course of study is required for professional interpreting? I've been an amateur translator for some 10 years and now I have the opportunity to work as an interpreter. Alas, I have no professional training though I've already had assignments in civil engineering and business.

Hello everyone,

Would you be able to share information on getting an interpreter certificate or whatever appropriate course of study is required for professional interpreting? I've been an amateur translator for some 10 years and now I have the opportunity to work as an interpreter. Alas, I have no professional training though I've already had assignments in civil engineering and business.

I recently moved to Amsterdam, the Netherlands, but I'm not finding a local program. I'm not fond of the idea of getting an online degree but maybe I'll have to consider that option. What's your opinion/experience with online degrees?

Any information/advice/tips are highly appreciated.

I my self have my certs with my university degree, which is only additional and I work as interpreter for government bodies.
and actually I am in the process to form my own company, so I guess is mostly how you present your self.

Thanks! I've already been hired to do 3 assignments based on my reputation but I want to better prepare myself to do this seriously so I really do want to get proper education. If you know of anything I'd appreciate the tip!

If German is one of your working languages, the Uni in Mainz has summer courses for people with a basic knowledge in interpreting.

Highly recommended they also do continuous professional training for EU interpreters.

Thank you Nordiste! I don't know any German though. I work with Brazilian Portuguese-English

Hi
I can give you the European Institutions' line on this, in case you are interested in institutional work.

You'd need at least two foreign European languages (ideally with a third close behind) to work in the English booth. Brazilian Portuguese is fine, although you may need to adjust your ear to continental Portuguese. I don't know what your Dutch is like, but why not work on it?

Then you would need a recognised conference interpreting qualification (like the ... See more

Thank you so much for this info! I'm just interested in interpreting, institutional or otherwise I'm learning Dutch but I've only been in Amsterdam for less than 2 months so it'll take some more months before I'm fluent. I'm working on my other 3 European languages.

I'm more worried about the certification. I'm not finding any schools in the Amsterdam area, that's my biggest challenge right now, hence my inquiry ... See more
