I received an order from translation agency to make 'market research' for the country. It is my first time getting an order like this, that is why I even donot know how it is called in a proper way. Did anybody do a job like this, could you advise me on how much it might cost? Thank youCollapse

Not a translator's job Apr 10, 2011

As a translator, I would never accept this type of work. I'm not qualified or experienced in market research.

In my experience, the further I go away from my key areas of specialization, the less lucrative and professional the work becomes. And if it's something I'm not qualified to do, then it's downright unethical. Such offers must be refused.

"Market analysis" sounds awfully proud but from Halyna's description it seems like a task I'd give to a 22-year-old intern. If the agency wants to give it to Halyna, I don't suppose they see the task as requiring an MBA, just perhaps the knowledge of local language and customs.

Halyna: why not just try to find three potential interested companies and see how long/difficult it is. You have to take a minute and think what kind of a company would be interested in the agency's services, then use your internet skills to find companies that match your criteria. See if you can easily find data requested by the agency. Think top-500 lists, industry portals, business directories (but not Yellow Pages), etc.

It may require access to paid databases such as Dun&Bradstreet, which would be a bummer, but it may as well not. And if it does, the agency is free to either provide access or re-define their requirements. All they really need, after all, is a name and address.

Estimating the price Apr 12, 2011

Hello Halyna,

I agree with Krzysztof and

the best way to determine your price is to do the whole procedure with one or three companies (it depends how exact you want to be) while timing yourself; finding a company, inserting their data etc. Then you will get an approximate value which is closer to the real situation you are going to be dealing with.
