Marlene Curtis Dec 26, 2009:
Janisa Antoniazzi (asker) Dec 26, 2009:
Paula Vaz-Carreiro Dec 24, 2009:
Another question with virtually no context (sigh). Something must be done about this. I have just posted an entry in this forum:

Can anyone who thinks that far too many context-less questions are posted, please go to the above link and register your concern. Thanks.
David Drysdale (X) Dec 24, 2009:
Feliz Natal . . . Adoro Belém do Pára! Abraço e sucesso!
R. Alex Jenkins Dec 24, 2009:
Concordo, plenamente, que um pouco de teimosia vai um longo caminho. Tenha um Feliz Natal e um grande abraço de todos aqui em Belém do Pará :)
David Drysdale (X) Dec 24, 2009:
Right! Of course, I believe in my point (conviction) as everyone else. This collection makes for quite a mix! Of course, a little a dab of "teimosia" é sempre saudável.
R. Alex Jenkins Dec 24, 2009:
I know, but you want to summarise the question and bring it to a natural conclusion and try and make up the mind of the asker... but that's not our role here. We all know what it 'means'.
David Drysdale (X) Dec 24, 2009:
Richard . . Se eu chegar pra vc e disser, "Você é o cara! "I'm probably giving you a high five at the same time, right? You're the man!
R. Alex Jenkins Dec 24, 2009:
There is no possible way you can interpret the true meaning of this sentence based on the Asker's subject area and posted text. In an encapsulated world where there are no external influences or other possibilities then the literal translation would be correct.
David Drysdale (X) Dec 23, 2009:
Living lick!? . . Real deal!? Cat's meow!? Hmmm? Maybe too cute! É o cara! . . sounds like language coming from a "tough guy" . . I like . . "He goes around thinking he's the man!" He struts around thinking he's the man! Good luck!
R. Alex Jenkins Dec 23, 2009:
Agree David ...but there are more ways of saying "he's the man" than just that. He's the 'real deal', the 'living lick', the 'dog's whatsits', etc... you name it.
David Drysdale (X) Dec 23, 2009:
If you're referring to this guy or that guy as the "big shot", the expression in English is . . You're the man! Saying, "the one" or " the guy" . . doesn't carry the same message as "the man." Saying "the one" or "the guy" could simply be "pointing someone out in a line up!

"he thinks he is the 'cat's meow'".

Peer comment(s):

agree R. Alex Jenkins : I was going to suggest 'the dog's bollocks' but this nicely suffices. Sorry, not meant to offend. You got the gist right. // You too, a Merry Christmas to you and all your family :)

he is the one

yet another possibility!!
Peer comment(s):

disagree David Drysdale (X) : If this guy or that is guy is a big shot (É o cara!), "he's the one" doesn't fit. "o cara" . . is always "male" in Brazil, right?

He's the real thing/real deal/the bees knees (see other options below)

Depending on the general tone and on what the previous sentence says. Take your pick:

He thinks he's the sh*t. Also: He thinks he's the greatest thing ever/He thinks he's the hottest thing since sliced bread (long, but cute)/He thinks he's the cat's whiskers/the bees knees...

There are many ways of saying that in English. It will depend on context. It could even be "He thinks he's the Messiah".
Peer comment(s):

agree R. Alex Jenkins : real deal :)

Portuguese term (edited): Fica achando que é o cara!

He thinks he's it.

Or "He really thinks he's it."

Speaker appears to hold a different point of view from him.
Example sentence:

With that amount of self love and adoration..is there any room for anyone else in there to share his life...he needs to meet his match..he thinks he's it....HARDLY!!!!

You see, our Postman is a wanker He's a self-indulgent git The prick's the smuggest man on Earth He really thinks he's it
