Portuguese term

uma 2a gesta de...com antecedentes de 1AE em....

Portuguese to English Medical Medical: Health Care
This comes from a medical report from the following paragraph:
**** foi enviada à consulta externa de Obstetricia - doenças do foro hematologico por gravidez de 7 semanas e pancitopenia em estudo.
Tratava-se de uma 2a gesta de 18 anos, com antecedentes de 1 AE em Setembro de 2000

Apologies if this is elementary, I wanted to check that -gesta- refers to pregnancy, I am stuck when it comes to -AE-.
Any help on this is much appreciated.
Thank you in advance.
Proposed translations (English)

Discussion

Dr Sue Levy (X) Jan 23, 2007:
You're welcome. And yes - gesta gestação pregnancy
Zaharanda (asker) Jan 23, 2007:
Thanks so much Sue. To be honest I don't think that would have ever occurred to me, I am really grateful!
Dr Sue Levy (X) Jan 23, 2007:
on second thoughts, it's more likely to be "aborto espontâneo"
Dr Sue Levy (X) Jan 23, 2007:
aborto electivo?

second gestation of an 18 year old patient with history of spontaneous abortion in 2000

2a gesta is short for "secundigesta". This means it's this 18 year-olds second gestation (she was formerly pregnant, and not necessarily had the child).
AE - Aborto Espontâneo - Spontaneous abortion - Explains what happened to her first gestation.

Peer comment(s):

agree Paula Vaz-Carreiro : The only thing I'd do differently would be to use MISCARRIAGE instead of spontaneous abortion because it is more commonly used, at least in the UK

Thx, Paula. They are synonyms, and the context is medical, so I'd use either one. www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/001488.htm
agree Muriel Vasconcellos : spontaneous abortion (699,000 refs -- that's enough to show that it's a standard term), and it matches the abbreviation
