Covering health beat

English to Russian Other Journalism Seminar
This is a seminar title/name for journalists. Я так понял имеется ввиду что-то типа 'Освещая (сенсационную)тему здравоохранения'. Так?

Discussion

Kevin Kelly Apr 8, 2006:
I did indeed spell it здравохранение. According to Google and Rambler, by far the more common (and presumably correct) spelling is здравоOхранение. However, this does not change the meaning of the word or the expression "coveri

Ara Mkrtchyan (X) (asker) Apr 8, 2006:
Okay, Kevin. My initial variant was "освещая тему здравоОхранения", yours has two Os, how's it spelled(don't have a dictionary at hand right now)? Isn't it "охрана" rather then "хранение"?
Kurt Porter Apr 8, 2006:

Trust me, there is no such nuance here. American Heritage probably means "beat" in the sense of "beat one's competitor to the story." The term "scoop" is usually used for that meaning. In your example, the only possible meaning is "topical area."
Kevin Kelly Apr 8, 2006:
Поверьте мне, здесь такого нюанса нет. Скорее всего в American Heritage имеется в виду beat в смысле to beat one's competitors to the story (это чаще называется "scoop." . З
Ara Mkrtchyan (X) (asker) Apr 8, 2006:
Загвоздка здесь заключается в том, что слово beat в American Heritage, Merriam-Webster, Lingvo 10 etc. переводится/обьясняется как "сенсационная тема" 'The reporting of a news item obtained ahead of one's competitors', то есть тут существует нюанс, как бы освещая тему раньше других.

освещая тему здравохранения

Your first version is correct, except for the "sensational" part.
The word "beat" in this context means "territory" in a figurative sense. I believe this comes from police jargon, where "beat" is the area of a city covered by a police officer. In the newspaper business, "beat" is a topical area covered by a reporter.
