Emulsion Manufacturing Process: an oxygen balanced non-detonable emusion explosive is formed by blending the correct ratio of oxidiser and fuels through either a stir pot or jet mixer; surfactants are used to bind the two incompatible ingredients together; teh resultant blend of an/cn, oil phase and suffactant gives 'water in oil' emulsion which is highly water resistant with a shelf life of 12 weeks under normal storage condintions; the oxygen balanced mix is essential to reduce the formation of toxic post blast fumes which could be a health hazard; a homogeniser shears the product to the correct dropleet size and viscosity; the intimate contact, dictated by the droplet size, ensures a highlly efficient detonation, improved resistance to shick dedensitization and improved shelf life;
Types of emulsion
- x - general purpose horizontal holes or down holes (flat development and long hole stoping)
- y - advanced shear characteristics to make emuolsion 'sticky' for general purpose vertical upholes (rings and sills)
- z - sticky formulation for upholes in diamond mining where lower energy is required to reduce diamond damage
- v - permitted formulation for coal mining applications where salts have been added to reduce the detonation temperature

The Component System
The product only becomes a sensitised explosive once it has been pumped through the homogeniser or in-line mixer and enters the hole.
