French term

choc rotulien

French to English Medical Medical (general) Tibial plateau fracture - Knee
Salut!

This is from a medical report about a patient with a knee injury (tibial plateau fracture).

Examen clinique
Inspection :
pas de déformation
absence de lésion cutanée
Palpation :
point douloureux exquis à la palpation : plateau tibial externe
choc rotulien
Examen neuro-vasculaire :
pouls pédieux et tibial postérieur perçu

I think it is floating patella (or knee), luxating patella (or knee) or patellar ballottement /click, but I am not sure which. Or it might just be referring to the patellar tap test, but I'm not sure.

Any help appreciated!
Proposed translations (English)
4 patella impact
4 patella tap test

Discussion

Sue Davis Mar 13:
I think it is a test to detect knee effusion, going by the definition I found. Choc seems to refer to the sensation of impact experienced by the "tapping" finger when there is knee effusion. However as this is in the context of a clinical exam, patellar tap might work better.
philgoddard Mar 12:
It's a finding on palpation, so I assume they've done a tap test and found a click.

the dictionary gives the translation 'patella impact'
Note from asker:
Thanks Sue - would you say this is more accurate than 'knee effusion'?

Purpose

Accumulation of fluid due an irritation of the synovial membrane is known as effusion; it could be serous, blood, or pus.
If there is swelling in the knee it should be evaluated to know whether it is a soft tissue swelling, a bony swelling or a joint effusion.

Perform the patellar tap test or fluid displacement test to determine the presence of fluid in the knee joint. The patellar test is best for identifying moderate-sized effusions. The fluid displacement test is better for smaller effusions.
