French term

molécules

French to English Medical Medical: Pharmaceuticals
So I'm working on a text for a company that produces applications for use within the medical industry, and one of these applications is related to the dispensation of medication. It refers to the term "molécules" a couple of times, and I'm not 100% sure if this is just another way of saying medication in a general sense, given the context:

"Une solution qui apporterait une technologie de conditionnement qui éviterait tous ces inconvénients générerait pour le patient plus de confort et de sécurité, pour les payeurs plus d’économie et pour l’industrie pharmaceutique une amélioration de l’efficacité de leurs **molécules** et un moyen de réduire leur impact négatif sur l’environnement."

A literal translation of "improving the efficacy of their molecules" just seems utterly bizarre, and in English the term seems to be used more to refer to the molecules contained within the medication, rather than the medication itself.

Your help would be much appreciated!

Althea Draper Nov 2, 2020:
Drmanu49 - would the use of the term therapeutic agents not exclude prophylactic agents e.g. prophylactic vaccines? Is that why you suggest using 'agents' alone?
Drmanu49 Nov 2, 2020:
This is one of my fields of expertise and the term molecule is never used in this context by pros. Sorry to disagree with most of you on that one.
Althea Draper Nov 2, 2020:
Large molecules / Small molecules As Joan says, the term 'molecules' is quite frequently referred to in the pharmaceutical field. According to AstraZeneca, a small molecule is "any organic compound with low molecular weight. Small molecule drugs have some distinct advantages as therapeutics: most can be administered orally and they can pass through cell membranes to reach intracellular targets." They are chemically derived, whereas large molecules (biologics) are extracted from living organisms. Large molecules are administered through injection or infusion (as they are ineffective orally) and include vaccines, antibodies, interleukins and gene therapy.

Molecule is used quite a bid. I've followed Fierce Pharma for a while and much more faithfully now that there is a lot of COVID drug news. Or "drug" or even "drug molecule"
Suzie Withers Nov 1, 2020:
Yes, someone has suggested "compound" in a peer response and in a previous occurrence of the term on here - sounds good
Tony M Nov 1, 2020:
@ Asker Neither am I an expert, but in other fields, I've often come across 'molécule' used in contexts where I felt it was better translated by 'compound' (for once, EN usage is perhaps less technically precise than FR!)
Suzie Withers Nov 1, 2020:
I agree, molecule does sound odd, but it is used in the pharma industry as far as I can tell. The articles below use the term freely. However, I think it essentially just means "drugs"...

I'm not an expert in this field, though.

Drug

"Molécules" here simply refers to drugs.

agree pennylyd : I would agree - either drug or compound is more generally used in the UK. See also https://www.proz.com/kudoz/french-to-english/medical-pharmac...

disagree Drmanu49 : No much too broad a term

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Given the context I think you're absolutely right, they're just talking about the medication/drug in terms of the product as a whole. Thanks!"

molecule

I would opt for molecule as they refer to impact they have on the environment. Disposal of "drugs" can be complicated by the actual molecule.

disagree Drmanu49 : Not in this case.

agree philgoddard : This is not the term I'd use, but it's not wrong.

compositions

Compositions is the molecules that make up the drug while formulation is how they are mixed together. As "molecules" is more about the ingredients than the mixing, I think this is best
Peer comment(s):

disagree Drmanu49 : Not in this case. because it is not what makes up the drug in this case but the agent itself.

Well, I'm glad you were SO VERY clear on why this answer is wrong.

molecules

Molecules are tiny particles, the component parts which make up an animate object.

"Molecules are the smallest part of a substance that retain its chemical and physical properties, and are composed of two or more atoms. Molecules are a group of similar atoms held together by chemical forces."

"Des molecules sont la partie plus petite d'une substance qui gardent ses propriétés physique et chimiques, composées de deux ou plus de deux atoms. Des molécules sont un groupe d'atoms semblables maintenus ensemble d'une force chimique."

In terms of the pharmaceutical industry the molecules are some of the component parts which together are formed to make medications.

Molecules can be considered as compounds composed of very tiny parts.

"A prophylactic vaccination is a selected exposure to a weakened or diluted form of an infectious agent to encourage a patient to form antibodies (resistance against the disease). If a patient is exposed to the infectious agent, the antibody will help prevent the spread of infection."

https://medical-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/prophylacti...

"The main problem is that the virus against which the vaccination is directed must have a different N sub-type than the virus present in the vaccine, which, for prophylaxis vaccination, is impossible to establish beforehand."

Example sentence:

"Une solution pour les payeurs est plus d'économie et pour l'industrie pharmaceutique une amélioration de l'efficacité de leurs molécules et un moyen de réduire leur impact négatif sur l'environnement."

One solution for those who pay is money, and for the pharmaceutical industry it's an improvement in the effectiveness of their molecules and means of reducing their negative effect on the environment."
