Spanish term

abrir en cárter

Spanish to English Tech/Engineering Mechanics / Mech Engineering
I am translating a service and maintenance manual for a vacuum packing machine.

There are several instances where the phrase "abrir en cárter" is used, referring to a certain way of opening the machine to work on it. I cannot find attestations of this usage in Google searches, and I am completely unfamiliar with this usage. To me a "cárter" is a crankcase, which has nothing to do wtih this machine. Examples:

Apertura en “carter” envasadoras XXX de sobremesa

La sustitución del switch se realiza abriendo la apertura en cárter de la envasadora como en el capítulo 3.4.1 y mediante una llave aflojando la tuerca que fija el switch a la cuba.

Paso 1 Abrir en cárter la envasadora tal y como se explica en el capítulo 3.4.1.

This manual might have been translated from Catalan to Castilian, if that makes any difference.

@Lorena I agree that the ST is not well-written, & agree with your alternate reading.
lorenab23 May 27, 2018:
I think carter here is being used as compartimento as in housing or possibly the vacuum chamber. I also think that this is not well written and it should read
1)...se realiza abriendo la apertura en el carter de la envasadora
2)Abrir el carter de la envasadora

(to) open in the housing/case

"Cárter" has several different meanings, among them crankcase, but also: case, housing, sump, oil pan.
I think in this case they are referring to an opening in the housing, or case, of the bottling machine.

agree Robert Carter : As you say, possible an oil pan or sump too; hard to tell without diagrams or more information.
