Russian term

60%-ной иммунной прослойки

Russian to English Medical Medical (general) immunology/vaccination
From a report about a clinical trial of a flu vaccine:

Особый интерес представляло определить количество лиц с защитным титром антител больше 40 (так называемую иммунную прослойку) после вакцинации.

***and***

Индекс и коэффициент эффективности вакцины А с учетом серологического подтверждения диагноза "грипп" равны 12.1 и 91.8%. При наличии в коллективе 60%-ной иммунной прослойки индекс и коэффициент эффективности были соответсвенно равны 4.6 и 78.5%.

I can't find any reliable information to help translate this phrase. All help welcomed!

Thanks.

Discussion

Martinique Dec 1, 2008:
1) 60 и 40 -- случайное совпадение;
2) не уверена, что здесь нужно слово naturally: в иммунную прослойку могут входить люди, уже переболевшие гриппом, и люди, получившие иммунитет в результате предыдущих вакцинаций
Wendy Cummings (asker) Dec 1, 2008:
Going on Mas63's answer, could it be "when looking at a population, 60% of which is naturally immune, the score and coefficient are..."?
Wendy Cummings (asker) Dec 1, 2008:
Based on answers so far, if taken out of context, a neat translation would perhaps be "immune population". In the first of my examples, we could therefore understand that if a person has a protective titer of >40, then they are part of this immune population. However, how does 60% come into it? Is it a coincidence that these two figures (40 and 60) total 100? (although I realise the first is a titer ratio and not a percentage).

percentage of immune individuals

Энциклопедический словарь медицинских терминов:
¶иммунная ¶прослойка — количественный показатель, представляющий собой выраженную в процентах долю населения) обладающую иммунитетом к определенной инфекционной болезни.

Насколько я знаю, в английском соответствующего термина нет (или он не используется).

Пример перевода с англ. на русский:
The incidence of diphtheria is inversely related to the percentage of immune individuals in an area...
Заболеваемость дифтерией тем выше, чем меньше ¶иммунная ¶прослойка населения...

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "I'm not dismissing Jim's answer as incorrect, but I need to research it further and until then, I think that this is also a suitable answer."

rate of natural immunity is 60% / rate of immune people in a community

I think this term is specific for Russian language and can not be translated in English directly

the fact that these two figures (40 and 60) total 100 is just a coincidence.

I beleive the translation you proposed is correct ("when looking at a population, 60% of which is naturally immune, the score and coefficient are...)

60% immune streak plate

The dose of infecting virus is reflected in the % lysis of target cells in the immune streak plate; when the percent goes to 60 there is a higher titer of infecting virus and the indices of the effectiveness of the vaccine are consequently lower.
