Discussion

Kelhara Translations (asker) Oct 12, 2008:
gas, flatus y otras gaitas... That's right, it isn't in any of the dictionaries or glossaries. It is just as simple as "colon gas" or any similar variation.
Gracias Muriel.
Muriel Vasconcellos Oct 12, 2008:
This is simply "gas" in English "Aerocoly" does not appear in any of my medical dictionaries. At PAHO/WHO, where I used to work, we rarely put a term in a glossary if it didn't appear in some dictionary. "Aerocolie" is French for "accumulation of gas in the colon." I suspect that "aerocoly" is a gallicism and that your original hunch was correct.
margaret caulfield Oct 11, 2008:
I must admit, I found your reponse to my references rather strange. Well, Anna, the condition certainly exists, so it seems highly strange to me that it is not in any of your "anglo" dictionaries!

Note from asker:
Ok, but if you analyse them, most are from non-anglo sites. I have not been able to find it in any of my medical dictionaries (Mosby, Dorland's, Stedeman's...). So, I've gone back to the definition and worked from there.

colonic gas accumulation

In all my years as a medical translator into UK English I have never come across "aerocoly" and neither does it appear on any UK medical site that I can find re the colon/small intestine.

hi liz, Neither am I, still mulling over it. Everything I can come up with are composites as you've suggested.
