Dutch term

balkenmodel

Dutch to English Other Textiles / Clothing / Fashion
Anyone got any idea what a "balkenmodel" might be in English? Context is spectacles (interview with an eyewear designer):

Trendsettend was hij dan weer met de balkenmodellen, met de rechte lijn boven de glazen

Discussion

MoiraB (asker) Feb 27, 2006:
I get the feeling that the text is talking about a design of eyewear that is not necessarily appearing in shops now. Past tense suggests it was something that was "in" at some point in the past. I remember seeing lots of people in Flanders about ten years ago with glasses that consisted of a metal bar/strip across the top of the lenses and extending out beyond the lenses. Lenses themselves had no frames. Think this may what the text is referring to.

Rimless

If like you say they had no frame it could be they are rimless glasses.

2 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "This is not, strictly speaking, the right term, though the glasses are rimless. It's the closest of the suggestions made, however. Brow-bar was a strong contender for a while, but it doesn't actually refer to the reinforcing "bar" above the nose bridge (as in aviator-style glasses). After doing a bit more research, I sent a couple of suggestions to the client, who opted for "single-bar styling". Does after all refer to rimless frames suspended from a "pencil"-like crossbar. Very trendy |3-)"

suspended glasses

glasses with a thick frame

I think it's those glasses with a very thick frame, and he talks about it in sort of obscure terms.

aviator style frame

Het is een bril met een "balk" erboven, voor extra stevigte denk ik. Zie website voor een voorbeeld.

brow bar or double bridge

Brow-bar
Brow-bar frames... sport a brow bar, or double bridge, above the nose bridge to connect the top of the frame fronts.

Bridge: The area between the lenses that goes over the nose and supports 90 percent of the weight of the eyeglasses.
A double bridge has a reinforcing bar over the top of the bridge.

Double bridge
A double bridge is a frame bridge with two connection bars rather than the more common single bar connecting the two eyepieces.
