Dutch term

samengestelde binaire maat

Dutch to English Other Music
Still on the subject of African music, I'd like some advice on the proper musical phrasing of one sentence in particular. The text concerns the "nwomkoro", once a purely vocal genre, now accompanied by various instruments (drums, rattles, bells). Phrases I'm stumbling over are "de groove is ternair samengesteld" (posted separately) and "samengestelde binaire maat".

Best effort so far, based on research rather than musical knowledge (!):

"The groove (? main beat?), played by the atoke and the dawuro, is in compound triple time, but as the number progresses it changes to compound duple time."

binary compound time

Just a suggestion:

"The second stage of the rhythmic synthesis consists on the formation of groups. The groups are formed with base in compound times. The compound times are groups of two or three simple times, starting from the marked sounds with a vertical episemata; they receive the name of binary or ternary, respectively. They are equal to tempo of 2/8 and 3/8 in modern notation (1)

binary compound time

ternary compound time

Each one of these compound times, in their entirety, can be arsis or thesis of a rhythm. "

agree Jack den Haan : Also correct, but duple (and triple) time are the more generally used musical terms as far as I know. Concise Oxford: duple time = rhythm consisting of two beats to the bar.
