Hi

I have Across v4.00.0 SP3d_en

I have been working on various files for an agency who are using Trados. After the last project they sent me a text file.. 'to update my TM'. I don't think theres any way of importing this into Across, as it would have to be a tbx file right?

When I open the txt file the first line says

Exporting to TMX Jun 13, 2009

Why can't your agency export to the common TMX-format (instead of the txt-format), which is easily done in Trados?

Then you can import it to Across (crossTank Manager - Import Translations).

If the text file contains at most 500 TUs you can also import it to the demo version of Wordfast, and from there export it as a TMX-file. (Wordfast is always nice to have, even if it is only a demo)

Yes you can do it! Jun 13, 2009

Of course you can import txt files to enhance/enrich your existing TMs. You go to crossTank manager > import…

Importing text files Jun 15, 2009

Louisa,

you are correct

With across 4 SP3d the import of text files is not a possibility.

TMX, TTX, and GLO files are the only import formats allowed for CrossTank.

I would propose the following:

1. Ask the client to send you a TMX file.

2. If that is not a possibility you might be able to write a macro.

3. Another option would be to convert the text file to a table and then create 2 RTF or 2 Excel files f

I would propose the following:

1. Ask the client to send you a TMX file.

2. If that is not a possibility you might be able to write a macro.

3. Another option would be to convert the text file to a table and then create 2 RTF or 2 Excel files from this and do an alignment.

This would work as follows:

A basic translation unit in the text file is as follows in this sample:

(TrU)
(CrD)15062009, 08:51:40
(CrU)TRANSLATOR
(Seg L=EN-US)A word or phrase can be used to find a document.
(Seg L=DE-DE)Ein Wort oder ein Satz können zur Suche nach einem Dokument verwendet werden.
(/TrU)
(TrU)

In this example you have 7 lines:

Copy this to an open word document. Convert to a table whereby you would specify the paragraph marker and specify (for this example) 7 columns.

This will provide a table with 7 columns.

Copy the column with the source language into either a separate word document or an excel spreadsheet and save with a name of your choice.

Repeat this with the target language.

Align the 2 files with across

I would recommend using excel files.

Uwe

PS: I changed the Brackets to round ones so it displays correctly.

Olifant Jul 1, 2009

Try Olifant (freeware). It allows you to easily convert txt files to TMX files (and the other way around as well). Just one comment, try the older version of Olifant. I've had less problems with it than with the newer version.
