What is "Other - N/A"? Jul 24, 2013

Antarctica? There are no translators who LIVE there (except perhaps in an expedition/station).

An island? Islands are "assigned" to respective continents.
Well, unless you are Napoleon in St. Helena Island...

The International Space Station? A secret orbital lab?

The geographically challenged?

The incontinent?

Pedants objecting to redundant use of "currently"?

Other could be depending on what is taught in a particular country's schools… Jul 24, 2013

In eighth grade geography, I was taught that North America and South America are two separate continents. When I came to Chile, I was told by several people that there are only five continents in total and that America encompasses both North and South America. So I definitely fall into the category of "other" because where I live, I am considered to live in the continent of America, but where I come from, I am considered to live in South America.

Then you will find those who object to U. S. citizens calling themselves "Americans" as there are Latin Americans who contend that they are Americans too, and they are right. How to explain to them that it's just what people say in the States? No one intended to hurt anyone's feelings by doing so.

"Other" may be Madagascar.
Biogeographers refer to the island as the "eighth continent", in recognition of its uniqueness and diversity.

And what is "N/A"? "non-assigned"? "non-associated"?

"Other" not so silly, actually Jul 24, 2013

Depending on where you were educated, you may have been taught that there are 5, 6 or 7 continents.

Here are some of the possibilities:

North America
South America
America (both North and South America)
Europe
Asia
Eurasia (both Europe and Asia)
Australia
Oceania (Australia and Asia, but not Europe)
Antarctica

I once visited a friend of mine in England who told me: "You are not in Europe here."

So opinions obviously differ...

I listed "other" for those people who will insist on quibbling about how every poll choice is imprecise, neglects entire categories of translators (usually comprising less than 10 in the world), and thus - alack and woe - cannot be accurately answered. I see now that even leaving an option for the overly fussy is not enough to prevent fussing.

Haha, yes, there are people who think like that, but it's a fact, not an opinion, that the UK is part of Europe.

Maybe other is referred to Central America, which is not mentioned in the survey, for whatever reason.

I live in Japan. Those in Europe, please unfold your maps of the world.

Japan is the skinny little bunch of islands at the far right edge extending down from east of Siberia to the Korean Peninsula and Taiwan -- this is where the water falls off the edge of the world.

Having been here 34+ years, I have never ever once felt that Japan is part of a "continent" and neither do the Japanese.
