Because I don't really work away from home, and when I do it's at my in-laws house so I don't think security is an issue.
I can only assume the poll refers to working in public places ....

When working away from home, I tend to take more precautions than usual.

I do it so seldom that the question hadn't occurred to me.
I assumed this question was about making sure that others don't have access to the text, but just now I wondered if it was about actually losing some of my work. Does anyone want to clarify?

Also a clarification: I only open my laptop in a public place to check my e-mail, NEVER to work...

Because I don't work away from my office - period. This should have been one of the options.
Anyway, everyone in my immediate neighborhood thinks I make a living "fiddling around with computers" and they wouldn't even understand most of the stuff I translate anyway even if they were to find their way into my den.
The best security is telling nobody nuffin.

This is true for me as well. I only work at home. I think only one of my friends/acquaintances has the foggiest notion of what I do. Most people just can't get their head around it for some reason - and that is just fine with me.

More, if you work in public places, are you making sure to be near a corner so no one can look over your shoulder, are you putting security up on your sharing capabilities so no one can access your computer from another on the same network, if you walk away, are you closing the screen and setting a password upon opening it up again, etc. I mainly posed this question to get those who work away from their office/home who maybe aren't as knowledgeable about computers and haven't thought about the ... Computer security is a risky thing and you need to be careful, especially when dealing with confidential materials. When in doubt, don't go out! ▲ Collapse

I assumed the question was to do with working in a coffee shop or similar and using a public wifi system or other mobile internet solution to transmit a document to the client.
I've certainly seen proz users expound on the delights of being able to work anywhere ... on the beach ... etc.

Why would I work on confidential material in a public place? Sorry, this makes no sense. Either the material you are working on is confidential, than you should take the necessary precautions (one of them - not working in a public place), or it is not confidential.
Working away from home for me normally means at the client facilities (because of confidentiality reasons) or in our "office" in Southern France, where the security of the network/internet infrastructure is as high as in ... This having been said, I treat every translation as confidential anyway, because it is not my prerogative to publish them, but the clients'. However, I don't think anyone would be interested in accessing the stuff I work with.

I do work away from home on occasion (I've had a couple of Internet outages last year, and I had to work at a café for a few days). As I said, it was mostly internet and magazine content which was made public right about a week after, anyway... ▲ Collapse

I never work anywhere but in my office.
When I'm away from my office I don't work. It's as simple as that.
I wouldn't dream of working in cafés (why should I? I can make my own coffee) and when I'm travelling it's because I'm on holiday and I wouldn't dream of working while being on holiday (because then it wouldn't be a holiday, right?).

The more of these polls I see, the more I realize quite how difficult it is to write a good question. There is almost always some ambiguity to the question. Probably also as we are so used to looking for the odd trap here and there, we see them everywhere! Doesn't mean we're right to do so, but I think we can't help it.

So, I do sometimes work away from home. At home/office I work on my laptop and once a piece is paid for it goes onto my external disk and that's it. I never leave my computer lying around and have all the usual codes to access it and so on. I try to be sensible and avoid being paranoid about it. When I work away from home, then it's on the same laptop. On occasion, I work away from home in order to work at a client's office as for some, none of their stuff is allowed out of their system. Trials, studies and so on. Participant names etc, that work is done in situ and I take my car, my phone, ID and money.
All work is bound by professional secrecy anyway and I keep it to myself. ▲ Collapse
