Between the reading involved in the translations I do and the courses I've been studying since I returned to university full-time, I really haven't got time to read for pleasure. It's a pity because reading, just for fun, is one of the best ways I know to relax. Actually, I find the courses I'm studying (history and Spanish) quite interesting but knowing there's an exam at the end sort of takes some of the fun out of it

I read for pleasure when I can. Sometimes that means I get through a book in a day. Other times I don't read anything for months.

I read every day and take the time to (at least at night time). For me it's a good way to have a break and totally disconnect from the task at hand. Enough to occupy my thoughts at night. What I should do is read more about my works interest to try to get more vocabulary but I must say I like recreational reading:)
As Mary Worby, sometimes one book a day (always difficult to stop reading to get back to work) but generally at least a couple of pages !

I read whenever I can, always in the evening, then at weekends, and when I have some free time during the day... my husband recently gave me a Kindle, so now I can even read on the go, for example when I go and pick-up the kids at school, it's great

But you certainly notice if you haven't got the right book to read to send you off to sleep. Too interesting and you read late into the night and are exhausted in the morning, not engaging enough and your thoughts stray and don't let you drift off to sleep. Major withdrawal symptoms arise if you find yourself in the position of no book (unexpected stay where there is no reading matter - either a non-reading household, which I am always amazed to discover is not that unusual, or a hotel: the tele... Major withdrawal symptoms arise if you find yourself in the position of no book (unexpected stay where there is no reading matter - either a non-reading household, which I am always amazed to discover is not that unusual, or a hotel: the telephone call instruction leaflet is NOT suitable reading matter in these circumstances, and there have been occasions when I have even started looking for the Gideon Bible, no longer a constant in hotel rooms I note).
I suppose there are worse addictions.

Usually I find a little time in the afternoon when my older son is doing his homework and my younger son is doing something quiet and then also later in the evening after I read my kids a story and put them to bed. I catch up reading news when I am working. I have a couple of hours a day set aside for study on my LLM course but we are a pretty outdoor family and winter short days have us all feeling a little cabin fever so the way we work our weekends we don't have much time free for reading esp... I like to read only on vacation. As for the rest of the year when I'm working, I prefer to spend my free time far, far away from any sort of written text Going for a walk before sleeping is better for the quality of sleep than reading before sleeping. Yoga is also fine, but not as good as a brisk walk.

I replied "on a break" and I realize that in my mind that was "during a pause in the day" but suppose now that it meant "break" in the meaning of holiday.
In fact I read pretty much all the time. When I am working I find it takes me somewhere else altogether yet keeps the old machine ticking over so that getting back up to speed is much easier. After having realized that public transport was speedier and much less costly now I live in town, a fact accentuated by the construction in ... Others take their neurons on trip with their iPod. A book is more cumbersome but better for my ears, which I intend preserving longer than most teens will theirs these days!
I hate reading in bed. If the book is good, it stops me from sleeping and if I'm not enjoying it, then what's the point in reading it. I don't like spending hours sitting up in bed, but like to snuggle down and sleep. So for me, books and beds are not good bedpartners!
One of my favorite reading times is Sunday morning. I love reading when I have just woken up. Transported elsewhere by someone else's words rocks me out of sleep and into consciousness through a lyrical wordlock. Coffee, baguette, good book... miam! ▲ Collapse

soI read a bit in-between translations, but mostly informative stuff, National Geographics of industrial magazines. I do not start books because I know I do not have the time to finish them

I'm sure if one of the answers was "when I should be translating but I get distracted, such as while looking up terminology", it would have got the highest vote. Or is it just me?

For me, it is rare a day goes by when i don't read for pleasure. I MAKE time for reading in the same way I do for eating or drinking, it is that esential. It may just be a few pages, it may be a whole book. I like to read in the afternoons, when my energy is a bit too low to do any serious work, and, I must admit, this reading in the hammock or on the sofa often ends up being that most wonderful of things.....a siesta!

Yes - I fall for this one every time - so much interesting stuff out there... Hey - no Wiki yesterday!! Where would we be without it, eh?
Also: I get sidetracked by dictionary entries that look interesting!!! yes - in the old-fashioned 'book' style dictionary, which I STILL use on a daily basis!!! I know, I know.......
