I always try to use Arial and letters without serifs, like Times New Roman, Monotype Corsiva.
Serifs (strokes) in letter borders make reading difficult. International Standards call for san serif fonts.

Of course, I try to match the original. But if the font is illegible I change it to Tahoma (and try not to forget to change it with the original:-) ).
I am also myopic, so I prefer to make the text easily legible.

I always try to match the client's font...sometimes it becomes almost an obsession trying to find the right one!
Other than that, Arial, Tahoma or Garamond are what I usually use. Comic sans is definitely more frivolous but I like it for some of my kids' school stuff.
But to be quite honest, so many look the same to me.
I like the idea of changing the font for the proofing.
I don't like TNR.

I'm with the Tahoma fans but I will always match the original font first and will use a Word feature to suit the font to my taste during the translation.
Set Normal View in Word and adjust the Draft font option on the View tab of Tools/Options. Just disable Draft font during your final check.

...if it's a difficult format, for the problem is to get everything to fit. I'll use what the client gives me if it works. For proofing, Arial is what I can read best, but certainly not Times New Roman. I'll change it back and forth if necessary.
It's not a detail that worries me too much.

I'm a Garamond groupie, but as a rule I try to match the font used in the original. I have one client whose house rule is always to use Times New Roman but who also stresses that the translation must follow the format of the original - the two requirements thus not always being compatible.
I don't like Courier either - it looks like old-fashioned scruffy typing. Why do people still use it, I wonder? ...that people could be so passionate about the fonts they use (or don't use). I'm almost afraid to admit that I usually use Times New Roman - it never occurred to me that there was something not to like about it!

Times New Roman 12 was a requirement an agency I used to work for had for scanned/faxed (especially in those days) documents. I use it for all my own glossaries as well, so I must like it. I guess it just became a habit that stuck.
Although I obviously try to follow the layout of a document, it has never ever crossed my mind to try to copy the font.
Perhaps I'm not paying enough attention to detail and should have a sleepless night worrying about this...

I far prefer Times New Roman over other fonts - I'm not a fan of fonts without serifs. I think the text doesn't look 'whole' otherwise...

I'm also a big Tahoma fan. It's easy to read and looks professional enough for all but the most serious of documents.

Me too! And like Andrès I have an aversion for Times New Roman, perhaps because many moons ago I had a boss who insisted it be used for all documents. That said, he was a good boss!
