Hi Elena, You may be right. However, while the original may not have intended to differentiate, corticosteroids are only a subset of steroids and if the writer was being exact (which may not be the case) the Spanish phrase “fobia a los esteroides” was also available for the more general meaning. However, I’m finding that some dictionaries do not note the distinction, treating the word “steroid” as merely “short for” corticosteroid (correct definitions from Merriam-Webster Medical Desk Dictionary below).
What is more, “corticophobia” has been used in articles published in peer-reviewed English-language journals, such as: Allergy. 2005 Jun;60(6):735-8. and The Proceedings of the American Thoracic Society 1:152-160 (2004) and : “Effects of Corticosteroids on Lung Function in Asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease” By James F. Donohue and Jill A. Ohar (not a translation, by the way, the work was done at Chapel Hill)

Relevant Definitions:
Merriam-Webster Medical Desk Dictionary
STEROID
: any of numerous compounds containing a 17-carbon 4-ring system and including the sterols and various hormones and glycosides – steroid or steroidal \\st0-8rid-0l \\ adjective
CORTICOSTEROID
: any of various adrenal-cortex steroids (as corticosterone, cortisone, and aldosterone) used especially as anti-inflammatory agents — compare CORTIN 2
It would be interesting to know if the Asker can tell from the text whether the writer intended any such distinction.
Muchos saludos,
Gerard

Just to note that the case I make for \"corticophobia\" is based on a very narrow distinction that may not be important in patient phobias. Neither \"corticophobia\", nor \"steroid phobia\" have been discussed much in English-language journals (11 and 18 references in a Scirius search), and if \"steroid phobia\" is used more in a clinical setting, then that would be sufficient, and would have the advantage of being understood by laypersons.

Note from asker:
From context, I would use Steroid phobia. Thanks. |

: Hi Gerard. I agree with "steroid phobia". Here in US medical centers "corticophobia" is not used. The PubMed article you cite is a translation from German. Saludos
