I have come across this term in an academic proposal document on activities that form part of an academic project. "Charlas de extensión" seems to mean simply "talks" at university level...not formal classes, but how would this translate into English?

We need a little more info or a complete sentence to give you the English word.
Because in the US we use for example "University Extension Lectures" specially for those students who need some more credits or points.
Aqui "lectures" no en el sentido de "lecturas" sino de "charlas académicas".
Now, if the word is in a Sport context the translation would be "extension talks".
