Ah, thank you Phil - then this could be the answer. Unfortunately Philippa, though many of the features in the text are illustrated ("see example below"), trame is apparently not illustrated. I'll have to send off the translation, and will include a note asking for approval of the term raster.

@Claude-Andrew Sure, "pattern" is nice and broad and covers everything, but I'd say it would be a bit odd here, having it as the heading: THE PATTERN The pattern is... etc. Can you ask for an image?

It's the specific graphical technique, as well as the part of the image which contains this technique (i.e. you can point to the 'trame' and say 'that's a trame') I see why you would provisionally use 'pattern' but that is a lot more vague than the actual meaning. That said I don't really have a solution.

Phil, I associate raster more with computer images (raster scan versus vector scan). Philippa, yes, in fact I've provisionally simply used "pattern". I'd prefer to avoid grid pattern as being rather too precise (over-translation). Pattern has the advantage of meaning a lot of things (as trame does).

How about a "grid pattern"? The description does sound like pattern, and the use of "trame" suggests something grid-like.
