English term

perpetuation or perpetuance

English Science Science (general)
Could anybody please explain the difference, if any, between 'the perpetuation of the species' and 'the perpetuance of the species' and maybe indicate which is the term actually used by Darwin.
Thank you!

Thank you all. Perpetuation would have been my first choice, too, but today I bumped into "the perpetuance of the species" so that set me wondering. Is it just a plain mistake?

perpetuation

In the title of Darwin's work, it is Perpetuation.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Two scientific papers; On the Tendency of Species to form Varieties by Alfred Russel Wallace and on the Perpetuation of Varieties and Species by Natural Means of Selection by Charles Darwin were presented to the Linnean Society of London in 1858 that first publicised Darwin — Wallace theory of evolution by natural selection. Darwin's On the Origin of Species would follow a year later.

definitions below

perpetuation is the act of making perpetual or of preserving from extinction for an indefinite period of time

perpetuance is the quality or state of being perpetual or endless, mostly referring to time

I therefore think that Darwin would have referred to the perpetuation of the species.
