English term

could have been spent on a less deserving story

English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature
Hi! I am confused at this part. Thanks in advance.

Still, all of this talent could have been spent on a less deserving story. It is a tribute to the producers (other than Sagan and Ann Druyan, his wife) and Zemeckis that they took a chance on a smart, human science fiction movie, instead of buying explosions and space battles.

'Less deserving' here means worse, inferior. The movie plot was actually 'smart and human,' instead of the directors and producers opting for a mindless action flick, like their many contemporaries.

And 'talent' here refers to the people that were involved in making this movie (directors, producers, actors perhaps). The reviewer is saying that this team was very talented, and at least all this talent was put to good use, despite whatever drawbacks the movie may have had.
