English term

into the confines

English Tech/Engineering Mechanics / Mech Engineering printing press
"The grooved key is used to lock onto the inner race of the bearing located in the plate roll cylinder, thereby allowing the cylinder to move back and forth laterally to establish side registry.
The push button is used to ***depress the grooved key back into the confines of the plate roll pin***."

...I understand that it means to release the key and bring it back into its original position on the plate roll pin...correct?

into a usually inaccessible place

You are right. I think it means that the key used to lock on to the roller needs finally to be depressed in to a recess or something similar, out of the way of the functioning roller.

Into the object, within a limited space

I think that this key is locking the inner race to the cylinder to stop it from rotating in relation to the cylinder, but allowing the cylinder to slide in and out the bearing. The push button probably pushes the key into the cylinder so that it can be rotated or something (there is not quite enough information about the purpose of pressing the button here).

'Back' here probably emphasises the 'into a hole' rather than 'return to normal position'
