English term

Critical Realism

English Bus/Financial Management Research
In the context of business organisation research, minus the philosophical viewpoints, can somebody explain to me in layman's terms what does "critical realism" mean?

And also, how is it different from "realism"?

I know! After trying to wade through it, I had to go and lie down in a dark room with ice-cubes on my head! Hope it's going ok! :-)

Thanks Carol. I think the second last link you have provided contains the answer. But it's terribly difficult to digest.
anastasia t (X) (asker) Jul 27, 2006:
This is the problem. Google search results all seem to indicate that it's a philosophical term. But it indeed came from a business research text under the methodology section.
Will Matter Jul 27, 2006:
I've never seen this term used to refer to business, it's generally understood to be a philosophical term. You can also Google this and get plenty of info. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Critical_realism for example.

realistic expectations

The research can not guarantee that things will unfold in the same manner in all business organisations. Expectations should be realistic.
