"In terms of racism, the (the events of the)year 1957 (and our response to them)marked us out---- well, (others responded too, but) I don't know if it marked everybody....". This is how I see it. Hope this helps :-)
Non-ProZ.com Aug 19, 2004:
the year 1957 had marked us out:
1. Given us "mark(s)" that differentiated us from others.
2. Impressed us so much that we could not forget it(1957).
Which one is correct, neither is correct?

Targeted us

When we say,'mark your man out' in soccer, volley ball or other such team sports, we mean 'watch him' / 'target him' etc..

ignited

The reason that I sugest ignited because the importance of 1957 events is causing him and anybody like Bill to become politically active.

Dictionary :
Mark out: Set boundaries to
I gues it set their boundaries so well and wide that caused them to be active.

left its mark on us

I've never heard this with "out", but as it's repeated later on as "it marked me", it is clear to me that this is what is meant. The people in question were psychologically marked (as in scarred, or possibly tattooed - not necessarily negative) by the important events of that time. The idea is that they are indelibly altered by the experience.

impressed us so much that we could not forget it

I´d use your second choice, probably, the meaning of the sentence also refers that the things they experienced made these two people realize about all the potentiality they had within themselves, that´s why they "became politically active".Best of luck!
