Hi,
I was wondering whether "to be alive on this journey" is an idiomatic expression...or maybe it refers to a book or song...
In the passage below, the author is telling how the hypotheses he had stated in his first book were later confirmed by subsequent studies made possible by technological advances.

I think it's not about being alive per se but rather about being lucky enough to be able to experience (or be present on) the "journey"
(and this "journey" seems to be about the progress of research, in terms of having fully-integrated personal and interpersonal awareness

BTW Asker, the idiom you're thinking of is probably : "(isn't) it's great to be alive!" meaning it's a wonderful feeling to be so alive (and happy) but it doesn't mean that here as far as I'm concerned.

It is a journey of self-discovery so I think you need to have that extra sense of the experience.
Your quote below is also about a journey but this time it's through each stage of life, and means living/experiencing each moment of youur life, whether good or bad. We'd say live life , don't sleepwalk through it.

Yep, a lot of people do sleepwalk through...I try to be as Buddhist as possible...and off out now to get a beer!!!

as often happens with language, probably both of your suggestions can be right.. In fact, the author repeatedly stresses the importance of “presence” in his text. But I’ve chosen Gallagy’s reply because I think that, in this particular case, “alive” can also mean “being lucky to be take part in this journey”...

I guess because of the last sentence (Our focus of attention with presence in awareness and our attuned relationships with ourselves and each other, promote neural integration, the basis of healthy self-regulation), it refers to living, experiencing or being present in that moment.. Made me think an expression reminding spiritual concept of being alive, present at the moment.
