English term

Any courtesies extended to her will be greatly appreciated

English Law/Patents Law (general) marriage confirmation
This sentence comes from a short document by a marriage officer in West Indies which starts with "To Whom It May Condern", confirms that X married Y on a specific date and which states the surname the bride wishes to assume. It is ended with "Any courtesies extended to her will be greatly appreciated". What does it really mean?

Discussion

Pawel Bartoszewicz (asker) Mar 19, 2011:
I think the document was issued to both the wife.. and the husband. For some reason it was issued in addition to the "regular" marriage certificate. Thank you all for your input and thoughts.

What is perhaps important here... ...is just what the purpose or function of this document is supposed to be?

Is it a document being issued to the wife, merely confirming that she is married?
Jenni Lukac (X) Mar 17, 2011:
It could concern the item about the bride "assuming" a certain last name. Women traditionally lose their last name when they marry in Anglo-Saxon societies. However, today in most countries they have an option to keep their maiden names or adopt their husbands (Sometimes both hyphenate!). It might be a gentle nudge to the reader to be pleasant and not to give the woman a hard time about her choice.
Pawel Bartoszewicz (asker) Mar 17, 2011:
What I find funny is that it's only her that any courtesies should be extended to, even though the document mentions both parties to marriage.

writer requests person reading the document to go out of his to treat the bearer well.

The writer is requesting that the person or official handling the case to be courteous and go out of his or her way to be helpful to the "bride".

any kindnessesq/help you can offer her will be very welcome.

"extended to her" means offered to her. It sounds like a formal phrase, and means that any kindnesses or help that are offered to her by "you" (anyone) will be greatly appreciated.

agree Sheila Wilson : An ultra formal phrase - that needs to reproduced if it is translated into another language
