a type of door giving/preventing access between levels

A solid structure that acts like a door but is laid on the floor when closed and pulled up or let down to open. Can have various uses in a fortress:
- to cover a pit used for rubbish and/or excrement, or sometimes to keep prisoners in
- to keep enemies out but allow friends in in secret
- to allow for the escape of those inside e.g. in a siege

neutral B D Finch : Not all hatches are horizontal, e.g. serving hatches between kitchens and dining-rooms.

Certainly, but I wasn't giving a dictionary definition. I would expect a fortress hatch to be as in my explanation.
agree Yvonne Gallagher : It could be a vertical hatch or door as BDF says but I think this is more likely in the context. Often a hatch used either for dungeon/cellar or in tower/keep between floors

Thanks Gallagy. That's what I visualise here.

door hatch

(from ref. below)
Door hatch as peephole like the Middle Ages, a monastery door of iron antique wine cellar and cellar bar. 2 piece set consisting of a door for the door inside, and a grill for outdoor. Design your front door like in the Middle Ages in taverns and monasteries. With beautiful square ornamental screws. Barred door hatch with door flap re-established after models of ancient originals yesteryear. An eye-catcher for all Antique and Nostalgia lovers.
