Frederich what?

English Science History Diet of Worms
Can you help me to find the name of the Frederich mentioned in the following excerpt (from the transcript of the programme the ’Diet of Worms’)?

MELVYN BRAGG: What’s he confronted by? I mean, he’s not the only ambassadors and nor cardinals nor all in finery and he goes in his monks robe presumably?

DAVID BAGCHI: Yeah, the -- well the Emperor is there, Aleander the Pope’s representative is there, to say that the electors, the princes.

CHARLOTTE METHUEN: The Archbishop of Trier is there and the Elector of Brandenburg, George of Saxony, who’s an interesting person because he’s Frederich’s cousin and he is very for Church reform, but he is very anti-Luther. Frederich ((21:19)), who becomes later …

MELVYN BRAGG: So they all there.

Where 21:19 is the timestamp.

Thanks in advance. Darek

Discussion

DarekS (asker) Jan 14, 2007:
I believe the man mentioned here is Frederick the Wise, but the words she uttered can't be, in any way, ‘Frederick the Wise’ because I can hear the word beginning with ‘ba’ so bargain, baden, barbon, but on the other hand it doesn't make much sense to me.

Frederick of Baden

she says "Frederick of Baden, who becomes.." and she is interrupted.
I found this reference to Frederick of Baden, though it would seem he wasn't around in 1521... Maybe she made a mistake -? I'm not an expert on the Diet of Worms, etc., but can hear the words clearly!

He was succeeded by Frederick of Baden (1496-1516) a protégé of Maximilian of Austria, and Philip of Burgundy (1518-24), who did much for the encouragement of art and to improve church discipline.

Melvyn B. says earlier something like "all the ambassadors and all the cradinals in all their finery" (not "not in") - i.e. lots of splendour in contrast with Luther's humble monk's outfit; also, "Friedrich's cousin"

Frederick the Wise

Without listening to the BBC programme I would venture it was Frederick the Wise, just from the context you have given.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George,_Duke_of_Saxony

"George the Bearded, Duke of Saxony (27 August 1471 - 17 April 1539), was duke of Saxony from 1500 to 1539... In 1525 he combined with his Lutheran son-in-law, Landgrave Philip of Hesse, and his cousin, the Elector Frederick the Wise, to suppress the revolt of the peasants, who were defeated near Frankenhausen in Thuringia. .

http://www.pbs.org/empires/martinluther/char_frederick.html

"Frederick the Wise is remembered as the man who saved Martin Luther from the fury of the Catholic Church... Frederick was born in Hartenfels Castle, Torgau in 1463, the first son of the Elector Ernst of the House of Wettin. .."

JOHN THE STEADFAST: Elector of Saxony 1525-32, brother of Frederick the Wise (q.v.); b. at Meissen (15 m. n.w. of Dresden) June 30, 1468; d. at Schweinitz (54 m. n.e. of Merseburg) Aug. 16, 1532...... When he became sole ruler, after the death of Frederick (May 5, 1525), he announced to the clergy that in future the pure word of God should be preached without human addition, and that all useless ceremonies should be abolished. He resolutely refused an agreement with his cousin, George of Saxony, and with the landgrave of Hesse openly confessed the Evangelical doctrine. .."

"...Luther’s arch-enemy, Duke George of Saxony. He was not going to have any Reformation nonsense in his territory, whatever might be taking place in the neighboring realm of his cousin, Frederick the Wise. ..."

agree Kim Metzger : Who later becomes Frederick III. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frederick_III,_Elector_of_Saxon...

agree Rowan Morrell : Convincing references.
