: Right idea, but I fear 'always present' doesn't sound better at all, in the expression you've used. 'ever-present', perhaps... But you've completely missed out the 'threatening' connotation of 'looming' / 'ever-present scent of wild herbs' ??

you're correct that 'ever-present' would sound better here, and at least in my experience as an American...when something is ever-present it does have a 'threatening' connotation
