English term

provide and a hand up

English Social Sciences General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters
Hello,

Could you please help me to understand the part between ***: "Revenues from retail operations are used to address the affordable housing shortage in the community ***and provide and a hand up to*** families in need."

I think something is missing.

Thank you!

Tony M Jun 17, 2010:
Missing text Yes, I agree; I think it should be either "provide a hand up" [omit 'and'] or "provide {missing word} and {give} a hand up..."

I strongly suspect that someone was editing this text, and carelessly left the 'and' in by mistake.

provide support/assistance

As far as I know, this is not a UK English term, hence my medium confidence.

Oh, yes, that 'and' look like a mistake to me too,

agree Jenni Lukac (X) : There is an extra "and" in there. It's an American term and you've explained it well

agree Sheila Wilson : and thanks to Jenni - I didn't know this one, either

agree Tina Vonhof (X) : Faily common in US English. We also have 'a heads up' , which means to give advance warning.

agree JaneTranslates : The expression presents the image of a person who has fallen, and a "good Samaritan" who comes along and extends a hand to help the fallen one get up.

Wow! How interesting, especially how it became shortened.

provide a hand up

I think "and" was interjected between "provide" and "a hand up" by mistake.
The sentence should read as follows:

...and provide a hand up to families in need.
Peer comment(s):

agree Carolyn Gille : yes, I agree.. that's exactly what it is, there's an extra 'and' in there by mistake.

agree Anna Herbst : Must be that, but seems to be a bit of a mixed metaphor - "provide a hand out" or "provide a leg up" I've heard of, but a hand up?
