English term

..... lawyer ....

English Other General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters lawyer(s) in list
another question regarding lawyers ... how are lawyers normally listed in a list (read out at a hearing) containing names of several defendants plus their relative lawyers (in this case hired counsel) ? Can you simply write e.g. lawyer Rossi or is it more normal to write Mr. Rossi, lawyer (or another term corresponding to avvocato) ?
Any help (and web references) would be much appreciated.

Counsel

Hi Lesley, I don't know if you're doing I'd just put "Miss Smith, Counsel for X", "Mr Brown, Counsel for Y" etc. Italian lawyers are not the same as British solicitors/barristers but in this case you can put Counsel.
Five years ago this is what I always used to see in my office and as far as I'm aware it hasn't changed.

"A lawyer in the United States is technically called an attorney at law or an attorney-at-law. In some states a lawyer is called an attorney and counsellor at law (or attorney and counselor at law).

The American legal system has a united (or fused) legal profession, and does not draw a distinction between lawyers who plead in court and those who do not. Many other common law jurisdictions, as well as the civil law jurisdictions, have a separation, such as the solicitor and barrister/advocate split in the United Kingdom and the advocate/civil law notary split in France. There is also no delegation of routine work to notaries public."

Mr/Miss XY barrister, counsel for Miss B. (UK, of course)

Or if it is a solicitor, Mr/Miss XZ solicitor, Counsel for Mr C.
Counsel nowadays, in general, refers to all those who advise and represent litigants and have rights of audience.

Attorney for defendants (followed by the name)

This is from actual court paper in my file, when I was involved in a lawsuit. The name in ( ) is the name of my lawyer (incidentally however I was a plaintiff, not a defendant. Nonetheless no difference if for plaintiff or defendant).
Due to the sensitive nature of the matter (for one, and technical issue involved in this website), I cannot show you this paper to prove my point.
Nevertheless trust me! That's what it says.

What is written in the paper (summon or else) is what is read outloud in the court.
