Hello everyone,

NARRATOR
20 YEARS AFTER THE MURDER OF SUSAN SCHUMAKE, ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY HAS REOPENED THE BOOK ON CARBONDALE, ILLINOIS’ UNSOLVED CASE. AND HIDING BETWEEN THE PAGES OF THE CASE FILE IS AN OLD
SUSPECT THAT LIEUTENANT PAUL ECHOLS HAS A RENEWED INTEREST IN. DANIEL WOLOSON, THE VAGRANT EX-CONVICT WHO LEFT HIS BAG IN THE WOODS WHERE SUSAN WAS MURDERED IS SUDDENLY BACK ON THE BOARD

Does "back on the board" mean "back on the board of suspects", i.e. is considered suspect again?

Thank you

back on the murder board

The "murder board" is the corkboard (or modern version thereof) where cops tack pics of the victim, the scene, various evidence collected, close-ups, etc.

There is also the Suspect Board, as you say, when there are more than one suspect. Their mugshots are tacked up there, along with stills from surveillance cameras, artist renderings, etc.

I too first tread it as Jenni has, "back on board", back on with the program, but your context points to the fact that he is a suspect, and so he goes back on the Suspect Board.

On p. 217 of my novel she refers to it as a case board.

agree jccantrell : This is how I would interpret this from the USA. Just look at "Law&Order" or "The Closer" and they usually use white boards for this purpose.

Yes, and I'm reading a JD Robb novel just now where Dallas *needs* her murder board and sets one up at the hotel where she's staying ;)

agree Cilian O'Tuama : if they actually call them murder boards in L&O etc., then agree from me too.

could be case board too; thanks Cilian
agree Clauwolf : elementar, my dear...:)

agree Jim Tucker (X) : "Suspect board" ; murder board is generally figurative, a panel of questioners, but unrelated to a crime

back on board /involved once again in the case

I believe that the article is an error or typo. "Back on board" is an expression (like being "on board" a train etc.)

Yes, he's once again being considered a suspect.

It's a very strange usage. It may even refer figuratively or literally to a bulletin board where lists of cases and suspects are noted.

agree Carol Gullidge : or "back in the picture"//agree that "back on the board" is wrong here - sorry, forgot to mention that part!

Thanks, Carol. It is a very weird use of the expression. Yes, "back in the picture" would be a much clearer way of putting it.

If you read the rest of my entry, Jim, you'd have seen that I mentioned that possibility.
