further note on usage What this means in the example given is that the person is a member or affiliate of the ARUA. If the abbreviation is simply shown after his name as shown in your example, and the is stands alone (such as in a list of persons or a credit), it is not customary to provide an explanatory translation unless this is essential for the purpose of the document. If it is not essential and there is no convenient way to provide an explanatory translation in the text, just leave the abbreviation as is.

A note on usage

David has, no doubt, found the full, offical name of this organisation.

In English usage it is permissable to offer a translation, repeating the initials or acronym in parentheses after it:

"The French Association for Urban and Architectural Research (ARUA)..."
