English term

undercrops

English Other Agriculture
The drill permits the drilling of undercrops or simultaneous fertiliser incorporation in the seed furrow while the machine tills the soil, works in fertiliser and drills.

I am translating a manual about drills and I am not sure what undercrops means. Could someone provide an explanation or a synonym? Thanks a lot.

also known as intercropping. eg lettuce can be planted under cabbage/tomatoes/corn etc and be harvested before those plants get big and need the space...

underctropping also helps keeps the ground around the main plant weed free and can also add needed nutrient s to the soil with the principle of "companion planting"

so, a plant like alfalfa, as suggested in the first link, can be dug back into soil to add nutrients. Or mustard plants are good with potatoes etc...

agree Charles Davis : I think it's simply a crop that you use to underplant another, meaning "to fill around, under, or among with lower-growing plants" (M-W).
