Moulding
Moulding processes shape a pliable material into
the form of a mould or die. These processes include
sand-casting, die-casting, investment-casting,
powder metallurgy (sintering), injection moulding,
compression moulding, blow moulding, rotational
moulding and vacuum-forming. In each case, the
material is usually in liquid, pellet or powder form
and is cast by gravity or under pressure into metal
dies or into wax-, ceramic- or sand-formed cavities.
Each process varies widely in the size, quality,
cost, accuracy and material that can be cast so the
process needs to be carefully matched against
the design criteria.
