: "abgestorben" ist auch Pflanzenmaterial, das gestern auf dem Komposthaufen gelandet ist, aber man wird es kaum als "ancient" bezeichnen...

I think either would work in this context or even a combination of the two answers given. Surely, yesterday´s compost wouldn`t be highly biodegraded!
