Dutch term

animatie

Dutch to English Social Sciences Social Science, Sociology, Ethics, etc.
From a Belgian criminal records extract:

"Animatie en/of begeleiding van minderjarigen"

I believe it refers to assimilation?

Discussion

Patrick Ling (asker) Feb 11, 2014:
@Michael The context is actually the same as the reference you provided. Thanks.
Michael Beijer Feb 11, 2014:
@Patrick: Can we have a little more context?
Richard Purdom Feb 11, 2014:
animatie / animeren is gewoon iets laten bewegen. 'Encouraging participation' misschien
Richard Purdom Feb 11, 2014:
translating en/of will give you more problems...
writeaway Feb 11, 2014:
Puzzled. Whatever does this have to do with a criminal record and where does the idea that this could possibly have to do with assimilation come from??

agree Jack den Haan : Makes sense in this context!

Thanks Jack!
agree Barend van Zadelhoff : This is at least how it has been translated before. I am curious about what this 'animatie' means in practice: what kind of activities?

Thanks Barend! Me too.
neutral writeaway : so it's been properly translated for a French-speaking region and now the Flemish want it (re)translated into English by a Dutch native. Belgium today, in a nutshell.
3 hrs
How would you translate it?
agree Natasha Ziada (X) : Agree - strictly speaking this was previously mentioned by Barend in his answer

Uiteraard zorgen we bij dit evenement ook voor animatie voor de kinderen, waarbij oude volksspelen centraal zullen staan. Voorts is er ook ballondecoratie, kindergrime, en natuurlijk seniorenanimatie …

agree Natasha Ziada (X) : In this context perhaps: activities?
2 hrs
Thank you, Natasha. Possibly. However, according to the definition ('georganiseerde ontspannende actitiviteiten') these activities would be fun.
neutral writeaway : amusing answer given the context

I think children need entertainment, whether they have a criminal record or not.
agree Peter Simon : 'entertainment' is the meaning anyway, according to Kramers Woordenb. Ned. and http://webtranslation.paralink.com/ alike; inmates are probably given it (en begeleiding) to avoid entertaining themselves by attacking e/o or the wardens ...
3 hrs
Thank you, Peter. Why not. Also remember this is about children.
neutral Jack den Haan : Strictly speaking yes, but like writeaway I have my doubts as to whether this fits the context.
4 hrs
I don't see what is wrong with entertainment for children. However, what does this 'animatie' mean in practice.
agree Hans Geluk : There may or may not be an issue with 'entertainment'. It may be from a criminal record, but without more context, this can perfectly refer to something in society rather than in gaol.

Thank you, Hans. We would need to know what this 'animatie' referred to in the text means in practice in order to be able to give a decisive answer.

animation

FYI: I always use this sentence: Extract taken from the criminal records requested to carry out an activity that is NOT classified under the heading of education, psycho-medical-social counselling, youth counselling, child protection, animation or counselling of minors.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Barend van Zadelhoff : As far as I know "animation" means something completely different in English, seems to me an incorrect 'literal' translation. http://tinyurl.com/okqsl7e

neutral Jack den Haan : I have to agree with Barend. 'Animation' is a so-called false friend in this context.
