I think this is a typo and that it should read granulites See the web reference. These are rocks that have a very high mineral content, which fits into the context of your text.

After reading Kate\'s answer, I must admit that it makes a lot more sense to assume that \'granulaten\' should read \'granuliet\'. In that case, granulites would be the correct translation.
