Freud
I am busy translating a piece on Freud's theory of hysteria, and my problem word appears in the following sentence:
I understand what is meant (trail of memory), but a preliminary search on the net revealed "herinneringsspoor" to be a much-used term, not only in philosphy. I'd like to know if there is an "official" translation in English.

Comment: "Thanks - this was the one I went with. This is also used in the official Strachey translation of Freud's works."

unconscious memories (repressed)
An alternative account that has come to the fore in recent Freud scholarship emphasizes that the theory as posited by Freud was that hysteria and obsessional neurosis result from unconscious memories of sexual abuse in infancy

memory imprint
imprint - afdruk, indruk, spoor, stempel
Three symptom clusters are associated with PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder):
1. Re-experiencing symptoms
Distressing images, unwanted memories, nightmares or flashbacks of the trauma that cause distress and physical symptoms such as palpitations, shortness of breath and other panic symptoms. Because the *memory imprint* has not been processed by the brain in the usual way the flashbacks are very vivid and realistic and there is a frightening and uncanny sense of going through the trauma all over again.

Repressed memory
According to the theory, a repressed memory of an early childhood sexual abuse or molestation experience was the essential precondition for hysterical or obsessional symptoms, with the addition of an active sexual experience up to the age of eight for the latter.

Discussion
(Or, in a different scenario, the traumatic event is only traumatic because it relates to an even earlier situation, for instance infantile desires.)
Translating herinneringsspoor with repressed memories would be inaccurate, in my opinion.
