Dutch term

De afspraken en agendering (van X in Y hebben gevolgen voor Z)

Dutch to English Other Other
It’s defeating me how to get this phrase into the sentence below, so I'd welcome any suggestions. Context is measures to tackle domestic violence.

It seems to me that the problem is not so much the translation as formulating a satisfactory sentence in English. English speakers generally like to keep the verb fairly close to the subject, and in any case doing so promotes ease of understanding. I'd suggest:

(On the one hand), national policy on domestic violence is influenced by agreements and discussions regarding this topic in bodies such as the...'

Hmmm, that should be more like \'agreements and discussions regarding preventing and combatting domestic violence in bodies such as...\' Unfortunately, that has the same ambiguity as the original formulation (\'domestic violence in bodies such as...\' is not the intended meaning). So: \'National policy on preventing and combatting domestic violence is influenced by agreements and discussions regarding this topic...\' No matter how you cut it, it\'s not a pretty sentence...

agree Deborah do Carmo : best suggestion being the final one

neutral EgonWegh : Afspraken = agreements (or resolutions!), but agendering = strictly speaking not the discussion itself, but the act of putting something on the agenda (or raising an issue)

Fully agree, but the sentence is already awkward enough as is, and practically speaking, simply putting something on the agenda is unlikely to have any significant consequences. 'Raising the issue' (aside from the wordiness) would be a good alternative.
agree writeaway : was sure I had agreed yesterday-oh well, better late than never. ;-)

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Yes, this was precisely my problem with this sentence. Crying out for paraphrasing. I was thinking along the lines of “tabled” for agendering (The fact that violence is tabled in bodies such as …., and that agreements are made in these fora to prevent and combat it, has consequences for national policies) but it was still a convoluted rendering. Kenneth’s last suggestion sounds a bit more natural. And we have to assume that if an item is put on the agenda it will be discussed! Thanks, everyone."

The agreements, and having put (X) on the agenda (in Y hebben gevolgen voor Z)

(Domestic violence) being raised as an issue and any agreements made...

... to prevent and fight it in ....

In my view, the sentence needs to be restructured; a literal translation would not work and may be too convoluted as it followed by the list of bodies. I deviate from the original by adding 'domestic' to 'violence' which is required to make it more specific here.

resolutions and agenda for action

"Resolutions and agenda for action" could be a proper translation

See for example this text:

Although the Conventions resolutions and Agenda for Action are not elaborated in the sort of format that will be required as a guideline for future democratic policy-making, the initiative has not been forgotten.

That would seem to fit the picture of a global conference under the auspices of the United Nations...

Entire sentence:
\"When it comes to preventing and combating violence [or domestic violence, if you like], resolutions and the agenda for action, as agreed upon by such international bodies as [...], will influence national policies\".
