Dutch term

naam + vzw

Dutch to English Other Names (personal, company)
It concerns a website of a non-profit organisation in Belgium.

The homepage says:

Wij heten u welkom op de website van *Naam Welzijnswerk* vzw.

Vzw is not part of the official name. Should I just translate it like:

Welcome to the website of *Naam Welzijnswerk* association without lucrative purpose. Or:
Welcome to the website of *Naam Welzijnswerk*, an association without lucrative purpose.

I'm neither sure bout keeping the name in Dutch, because it does contain what the organisation is about (welzijn)!

Discussion

writeaway Mar 5, 2011:
why not ask the client assuming this isn't the very first time they are having something translated. most organisations have a set way to refer to themselves in English..... is it a regional Flemish group or are they national? In that case you can always have a look at the Fr version and see how they've handled it. It's best not to wing it. Ask. It's a always a nice start to a job if the name/doc title is straight. and for websites it's even more important.
Kitty Brussaard Mar 5, 2011:
Agree with Barend IMO 'non-profit organisation/association' or alternatively 'not-for-profit xxx' and 'non-profitmaking xxx' are all absolutely fine here. See also http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nonprofit_organization.
Barend van Zadelhoff Mar 5, 2011:
is dit niet een 'non-profit institution/organisation?

vzw - vereniging zonder winstoogmerk

ik bedoel 'zonder winstoogmerk' wordt vertaald met 'non-profit'

en ik denk dat je 'npo' kunt gebruiken

Naam Welzijnswerk NPO

Normally you should not translate the organisation's name (the first time you can mention the translation in italic, between brackets or in a footnote) unless the organisation has -or wants- an international reputation and wants it's name translated.
"vzw" indeed stands for "non profit organisation"and in Belgium it is legally part of the organisation's name. It has to be mentioned with the organisation's name in all references and on all stationary to avoid prosecution.
Your translated text should read "Naam Welzijnswerk vzw" as it should in the original (Flemish) text.
Peer comment(s):

agree Kitty Brussaard : Agree, the organisation's name is best left untranslated in most cases, although there are exceptions (cf. WWF/WNF and other internationally well-known organisations). Perhaps the English meaning of 'vzw' can be added in brackets or covered elsewhere.

agree Chris Hopley : vzw is akin to Corp./Ltd./PLC/GmbH/SA/etc., etc. ...
