Dutch term

schurftarm

Dutch to English Other Livestock / Animal Husbandry pig diseases
This term is used in the revised IKB regulations for pig farms (IKB being the Dutch quality assurance system in this area). Only googles you get take you to these very regulations! I don’t get what the difference between schurftvrij and schurftarm is. If you interpret schurftarm as something like ’having a low incidence of mange’, the farmer would still have to use some sort of treatment to stop it getting any worse, surely? Or perhaps minor cases of mange are insignificant?

agree Deborah do Carmo : yes, "arm" meaning lacking/poor/ not having much literally, in this register "low incidence" is perfect.// :-))

Comment: "Thanks for confirming my own suggestion, though I'm afraid your search results were too general to be any use, even after adding in "pigs" (and excluding "guinea"!!). I actually found more relevant support for the phrase "low prevalence" in conjunction with mange or animal diseases in general. Incidentally, mange is the more common term than scabies in a pig context, e.g. http://www.thepigsite.com/PigHealth/article.asp?ArticleID=632 "Mange is a parasitic disease of the skin caused by one of two mites either Sarcoptes scabiei or Demodex phylloides. Sarcoptic mange (sometimes called scabies) is by far the most common and important because it is irritant and uncomfortable for the pig, causing it to rub and damage the skin which becomes unsightly. It significantly depresses growth rate and feed efficiency.""
