Wafelijzerpolitiek

Discussion

Erik Boers Jun 8, 2010:
Van Dale I wrote an e-mail to Van Dale about their ridiculous waffling (politics) suggestion. This is the answer I received:

writeaway May 30, 2010:
Oh for heaven's sake! That is really amazing. So many serious problems in Wallonia and so much money for nothing!
Williamson (asker) May 30, 2010:
Deepening of the port of Antwerp.
writeaway May 29, 2010:
thanks- what was the Flemish counterpart that made them think they had to build it?
Williamson (asker) May 29, 2010:
It is the giant boat lift of Strepy-Thieu at a cost of billions. Only one part works and its construction was actually not necessary. Now it is also used by stunt divers of Red Bull.
writeaway May 28, 2010:
question for Asker what is the big water-lift project in Wallonie (near Feluy I think) that is never used??
philgoddard May 28, 2010:
Wow! They must have written that entry at 4:59 on a Friday afternoon.
Barend van Zadelhoff May 28, 2010:
van Dale this is what van Dale offers: waffling (politics)

Politique

agree Barend van Zadelhoff : in the asker's text it could be put in qoutation marks, of course

actually the Dutch should be kept too. it's more of a Flemish expression. Even though the French can use politique du gaufrier, they tend to keep the Dutch too.
agree Chris Hopley : deliciously Belgian!

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "quid pro quo could also be used, but given that it is a 100 % Belgian concept, your translation suits best."
