Dutch term

conveniërend

Dutch to English Bus/Financial Finance (general) Banking
In a bank's proposal for providing various facilities to a company, the bank uses the following term: conveniërend’

Examples:

1. kredietverzekerd en XXXX bank conveniërend
2. XXXX bank conveniërende jaarrekening over het laatste volledige boekjaar met een goedkeurende accountantsverklaring
3. XXXX bank conveniërende interne cijfers, niet ouder dan 2 maanden

I’ve never come across the use of this word in this type of context. I can only think of ‘as convenient for XXXX bank’, but somehow it doesn’t sound right. A colleague suggested that a good translation of "conveniërende" in this context could be "conventional" or usual/standard/normal.

Any confirmations/comments/suggestions?

Discussion

jarry (X) Apr 13, 2008:
The point is that the annual accounts/interim figures will have to be to the bank's satisfaction for the loan to be granted/continued. To the satisfaction of the bank means that the borrower in question must be solvent based on the bank's criteria.
Bracha de Man (asker) Apr 13, 2008:
agree with Jarry I've of course followed the discussion that resulted from my query. I also tend to think in the direction of suitable for the bank/to the bank's satisfaction or what a colleague had suggested off this forum (according to the bank's conventions/standards/usual manner of doing things). Facilitating is not relevant here, and convenient sounds like a 'false friend'. It might be alright in Dutch (conveniëren) but the connotation in English takes it in a different direction and not suitable for the content.

disagree jarry (X) : A bank is not interested in figures/accounts that are 'convenient' or 'opportune', but only in figures/accounts that satisfy its requirements.

suiting

My Wolters dictionary says suiting and this is also supported by these (of very few) internet hits:

Convenabel = becoming, suitable, fit

"convenieren" in a financial sense may also be translated as: "it is not quite convenient; I can't afford it" according to the same dictionary. But in this context it seems that the bank demands interne cijfers en de jaarrekening in the form that most suits her. This seems to make sense.

Well, suiting or suitABLE or fitting; that should be the direction imo.
Peer comment(s):

neutral jarry (X) : The figures or acounts that are to the bank's satisfaction are figures or accounts disclosing that the bank is entering into a (loan) transaction that is not unduly risky. The format is implicit in the words "jaarrekeningen" and "interne cijfers".

The bank does not ask to adapt the figures, but to present them in a form that satisfies the requirements.
